Reach Every S-Milestone – Dental Health Week 2025
The Australian Dental Association’s annual Dental Health Week is running again this year from Monday, August 4 to Sunday, August 10. The 2025 theme highlights critical stages in children’s oral development “S-Milestones” and helps educate parents and carers with essential guidance to support their child’s dental health from birth onwards.
The “S-Milestones” break down key childhood stages:
Birth to First tooth: clean gums with soft, damp cloth
First tooth to 18 months: Brush twice daily and take children for their first dental visit.
18 months to 6 years Brush with kids’ fluoride toothpaste and floss between teeth that touch. Have regular dental visits.
From 6 years old: Use adult fluoride toothpaste. Have regular dental visits.
From 8 years old: Support children to brush and floss on their own. Have regular dental visits.
Why Kids teeth Matter
Tooth decay remains one of the most widespread chronic diseases among Australian children—and the best way to prevent it is through early, consistent action. By supporting children to reach every S-Milestone at the appropriate time, parents set the foundation for healthy lifelong habits.
Early engagement supports not just healthy teeth—but also better speech, confidence, and overall wellness. The ADA recommends four core oral health practices across all life stages:
1. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
2. Clean between teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes
3. Maintain a nutritious and low-sugar diet
4. Visit the dentist regularly
Parents & Caregivers: Start gum cleaning from infancy, schedule the first dental visit by age one, brush and floss daily, model healthy habits, and make oral care fun.
Did you know the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) can help cover dental costs for eligible kids (ages 0–17). They may be entitled to up to $1,132 in dental care over 2 years. Please call our clinic for more information on this scheme and to check your eligibility.
