One of our favourite types of dentistry is preventive dentistry. We all have heard “prevention is better than a cure” and this certainly rings true for dentistry too.
Preventive dental care will:
- Save money
- Save time
- Same spending time at the dentist
- Save you from having a painful toothache
Preventive dental care starts with you at home. This can include:
- brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste (spit out but don’t rinse your mouth after for a mini fluoride treatment twice a day)
- Flossing regularly
- Eating mindfully for your teeth, less refined sugars, not constantly snacking throughout the day, drinking fluoridated water, reducing intake of sugary soft drinks and sports drinks.
- Wearing a mouthguard when playing contact sport to prevent damaging your teeth. Did you know a mouthguard may also reduce your risk of a concussion?!
It is also important to visit your dentist regularly. At a dental check- ups your dental professional will thoroughly examine your teeth and mouth:
- Looking for signs of dental problems when they are smaller and easier to manage and potentially reversible
- Apply dental fluoride treatment. Regular fluoride treatments can reduce your risk of decay by 50%
- Ensure you are brushing thoroughly and correctly and advise on tips for reaching tricky areas
With effective preventive care we hope to limit the impact of dental problems and reduce the need for extensive dental treatments.
